Sun-Proof Your Skin: Summer Sun Tips for Healthy Skin

Dr Findley Sun Tips

As the temperature rises and the sun shines brighter, we all need to prioritize sun safety to keep our skin healthy and protected. July is UV Safety Month, and as a board-certified, fellowship-trained dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, I'm here to share expert advice and summer sun tips to help you enjoy the season while safeguarding your skin.

A combination of sunscreen and physical protection like sun protective clothing and hats are your best defense against harmful UV rays: Apply SPF 30 (or higher) every two hours, and don't forget to cover those often-neglected areas like the ears, lips, feet, and back of the neck. Remember to shield your delicate lips with a lip balm containing SPF, and always reapply sunscreen after swimming or sweating. Choose water-resistant sunscreen, but remember it's not waterproof, so reapplying is key! Sunscreen is not just for beach days; make it a part of your daily routine to protect your skin from cumulative sun damage. I always start my morning by applying a facial moisturizer that has a high SPF, and we sell some of my favorites in our office.

Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are the strongest: Plan outdoor activities early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is less intense. If shade is limited, use umbrellas, hats, and protective clothing to create your own shade and reduce direct sun exposure.

Cover up with protective clothing and swimwear: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting garments made from tightly woven fabrics. Long-sleeved lightweight shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protective sunglasses provide added defense. Covering up can shield your skin from harmful UV radiation and prevent sunburn and premature aging.

Stay hydrated to keep your skin healthy and glowing: Drinking plenty of water helps maintain your skin's moisture levels and aids in preventing sunburn. Remember to drink water before, during, and after outdoor activities, especially when you're exposed to excessive heat. Stay away from sugary drinks and alcohol, as they can dehydrate your body and skin. Make water your go-to drink this summer and quench your skin's thirst from within!

Enjoying the summer sun doesn't mean compromising your skin's health. By following these essential tips, you can enjoy outdoor activities while safeguarding your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Prioritize sun safety, protect your skin, and have a safe and enjoyable summer season ahead. Let's soak up the fun, not the sunburn!
