Winterizing Your Skincare Routine

As the chilly winter months approach, it's essential to adjust your skincare routine to protect your skin from the harsh weather conditions. Winter can be particularly challenging for your skin, as cold temperatures, low humidity, and indoor heating systems can lead to dryness, flakiness, and irritation. Whether you have oily, dry, or sensitive skin, here are some recommendations to help you keep your skin healthy and glowing all winter long.

1. Hydration is Key: Moisture is your skin’s best friend during the winter. Invest in a high-quality, hydrating moisturizer to keep your skin's natural barrier intact. For dry skin, opt for a rich, emollient cream, while those with oily or combination skin should look for a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer.  Choose thicker creams or simply Aquaphor over lotions, as the latter can oftentimes be drying.  It is important to moisturize several times throughout the day, especially after bathing.

2. Gentle Cleansing: Avoid harsh, drying cleansers. Instead, choose a gentle, hydrating cleanser that won't strip your skin of its natural oils. Cleansing too often or with hot water can exacerbate dryness, so choose lukewarm water and limit your cleansing routine to mornings and evenings.

3. Cautiously Exfoliate: Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and promotes healthy cell turnover in your skin.  This also allows your moisturizers to penetrate more effectively. However, be cautious not to over-exfoliate, as it can lead to irritation and redness.

4. Sunscreen Every Day: Don't forget your sunscreen, even in winter! UV rays are present year-round and can damage your skin, leading to premature aging and skin cancer. This is especially important when partaking in outdoor activities like skiing.  Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply regularly.  Don’t forget to protect those areas like the lips, ears and hands that often get forgotten, and a hat is always advisable to protect the scalp during the winter months.

5. Protect Against the Elements: For extra protection, consider using a hydrating facial oil or balm to create a barrier between your skin and the cold, windy weather. These products can lock in moisture and prevent the elements like the cold wind from wreaking havoc on your skin.

6. Don’t Forget the Lip Care: Chapped lips are a common winter woe. Keep your lips soft and hydrated by applying a nourishing lip balm regularly. Look for ingredients like shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil.  It is always advisable to incorporate a lip balm with SPF when spending time outdoors in the winter as well.
