Emily Ferullo, PA-C: Why Annual Skin Checks Matter — And What to Expect at Your Appointment
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and when detected early, it is also one of the most treatable. That is why annual full-body skin checks are among the most important steps you can take to protect your health.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it is constantly exposed to the sun, environmental stressors, and the effects of aging. Even if you feel healthy and haven’t noticed anything unusual, skin changes can occur gradually—and early warning signs of skin cancer can be easy to miss. An annual skin exam allows us to detect issues before they become serious and to establish a baseline for monitoring any future changes.
As a dermatology provider, I often hear the same questions: Do I really need a skin exam every year? What happens during the visit? What if something looks suspicious?
Understanding what to expect can help ease your nerves. Here’s a quick breakdown of what typically happens during a full-body skin exam:
Medical History Review: We start by asking about your personal and family history of skin cancer, recent sun exposure, and any spots you may be concerned about.
Head-to-Toe Skin Exam: You’ll change into a gown so we can examine your entire body, including areas you might not see regularly, like your scalp, back, and the soles of your feet. We’re looking for moles, lesions, rashes, and other skin irregularities.
Spot Checks & Possible Biopsies: If something looks suspicious, we may recommend a small biopsy. This is a quick, in-office procedure that allows us to send a sample to the lab to determine if it’s benign, precancerous, or cancerous.
Time to Ask Questions: We’ll go over any findings, share sun safety and skincare tips, and answer your questions. Our goal is to make sure you feel informed, empowered, and cared for.
Your Appointment is a Conversation, Not Just an Exam
Many of our patients are surprised by how quick and reassuring the process is. We’ll talk you through each step, explain what we’re looking at, and make sure you leave with a better understanding of your skin and what to watch for. These are some of the most common questions we hear from patients:
“Will it be awkward or uncomfortable?”
We do everything we can to make you feel at ease. Your comfort and privacy are always a priority.
“I’m young and healthy—do I still need one?”
Yes! Melanoma is one of the most common cancers in young adults, and catching it early makes a big difference in outcomes.
“What if I have a lot of moles?”
That’s exactly why you should come in. We specialize in monitoring and mapping moles for any changes over time.
