What Your Skin Is Telling You After Vacation: Post-Trip Care from Nadia Rudman, PA-C
Vacations are meant to relax and recharge you, but sometimes your skin may come back feeling anything but refreshed. Summer travel can take a toll on your complexion, from long flights and sun-filled days to pool chlorine and insect bites. According to Nadia Rudman, PA-C, physician assistant, your skin is often the first to show signs of stress, dehydration, or damage after a trip.
The good news is that with a few simple post-travel steps, you can help your skin reset and stay healthy.
Hydration Is Key: Airplane cabins are notoriously dry, often with humidity levels lower than those in the Sahara Desert. Combine that with extra sun exposure or salty ocean water, and your skin may feel tight, flaky, or dull after vacation. Nadia recommends replenishing hydration inside and out. Drink plenty of water to restore balance, and use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to repair your skin barrier. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin to lock in moisture.
Repair Sun Damage Early: Even the most diligent sunscreen users sometimes return with extra color or a burn. Sun damage is cumulative, so each exposure increases long-term risk for wrinkles, dark spots, and skin cancer. After vacation, step up your routine with antioxidants like vitamin C to help repair UV damage and brighten skin tone. If you notice peeling, resist the urge to scrub or exfoliate aggressively. Instead, apply soothing products like aloe vera or a calming moisturizer and give your skin time to heal.
Be Alert for Rashes or Irritation: New environments can trigger unexpected skin reactions. Pool chlorine may cause dryness or itchiness, while bug bites can lead to redness and swelling. Some travelers also experience “traveler’s rash” from heat or new detergents. Most of these irritations improve on their own, but Nadia advises keeping an eye on anything that worsens or doesn’t resolve. Your dermatologist should evaluate persistent rashes, painful bumps, or spreading redness.
Watch for Lingering Spots: It’s normal to return with freckles or tan lines, but any spot that doesn’t fade, looks unusual, or changes quickly deserves attention. “Your skin often gives you early warning signs if something isn’t right,” Nadia explains. Pay special attention to moles, dark spots, or areas that remain irritated after vacation. If you see a sore that won’t heal or a new growth, schedule an appointment promptly.
When to Check in With Your Dermatology Team
Most post-vacation skin issues, such as dryness, mild peeling, or bug bites, can be managed at home. But don’t wait if you notice anything suspicious. A dermatologist can distinguish between harmless irritation and something more concerning. Early evaluation not only provides peace of mind but also ensures timely treatment if needed.
Travel is wonderful for your mind and spirit, but it doesn’t have to set back your skin health. By rehydrating, repairing sun damage, and monitoring for anything unusual, you can help your skin bounce back quickly. And if you’re ever unsure, our dermatology team, including Nadia Rudman, PA-C, is here to guide you. After all, healthy skin is the best souvenir you can bring home.
