More Than Skin Deep: The Emotional Journey of Mohs Surgery

When most people think of skin cancer treatment, they focus on the physical aspects—diagnosis, surgery, and healing. But what’s often overlooked is the emotional journey that comes with it. As a Mohs surgeon, I’ve seen firsthand how deeply personal and overwhelming this experience can be for patients.

Receiving a skin cancer diagnosis can evoke a flood of emotions—fear, confusion, and uncertainty. Even if you were anticipating the news, hearing the word “cancer” is never easy. Many patients worry about the seriousness of the condition, what the treatment will involve, and how it might affect their appearance and ability to exercise and enjoy many daily activities.

For appropriate skin cancers, Mohs surgery is the gold standard and is the most effective treatment for skin cancer, with a cure rate of up to 99%. It allows for the removal of cancer layer by layer, preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Although the success rate is extremely high, this does not mean the process is stress-free. The day of surgery can be long, and waiting for lab results between stages can increase anxiety. After surgery, concerns often shift to scarring, recovery, and what comes next.

That’s why our approach goes beyond the technical side of surgery. We’re here to support you emotionally, too. From the moment you walk through our doors, we:

  1. Make Sure You Know What to Expect: Dr. Findley performs a detailed consent with every surgical patient that walks through the door.  She will take you through the step-by-step process of Mohs surgery, and anticipated reconstruction, all while writing and drawing down on the consent form for your viewing.

  2. Encourage Questions: There’s no such thing as a silly question. We create a welcoming space for questions that helps patients feel heard, educated and more in control of their care and experience.

  3. Offer Tips for Managing Anxiety: Techniques such as deep breathing, bringing a friend or family member to the appointment, or listening to calming music during the procedure can help reduce stress.

  4. Share Reassurance About Scarring: Mohs surgery allows us to prioritize preserving healthy tissue and minimizing scarring.  Dr. Findley’s extensive experience in reconstruction allow her to deliver the best cosmetic outcome for every patient.

  5. Provide Post-Surgery Support: We’re still here for you after the procedure!  Dr. Findley always explains to her patients that follow-up visits at our office will happen until both she and the patient are satisfied with the results.  Some patients do not have to return after surgery, while others must come in for regular bandage changes or checks for many months afterwards.  We provide extensive guidance on wound care and scar management.

  6. Normalize Emotional Reactions: It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed. Identifying peoples’ specific triggers and fears is quite helpful in guiding them through the experience in the best possible manner.

Mohs surgery is about more than removing skin cancer. It’s about restoring health, confidence, and peace of mind. We recognize that healing isn’t just physical. It’s okay to feel nervous, vulnerable, or unsure.  At Findley Dermatology, you’re not alone in this—our team is here to walk with you every step of the way, offering both expert care and genuine compassion.
