The Most Common Questions We Hear in our General Dermatology Appointments

When it comes to your skin, there’s no such thing as a “silly” question. We encourage curiosity and conversation during our appointments with patients because understanding your skin is the first step to keeping it healthy and beautiful. Here are some of the most common questions we hear during general dermatology visits.

1. How often should I get a skin exam?
The frequency of your visits truly depends on the nature of what brings you in to start.  For those practicing due diligence and seeking a baseline exam due to a past history of sunburns and sun exposure, you may only need an annual exam if there are no concerning findings at your initial visit.  However, it is not uncommon for our practitioners to want to follow moles or other lesions closely. Your skin deserves the same kind of preventative care and attention as do other parts of your body, and it’s important to remember that when skin cancer is caught early, it’s generally very treatable. Many skin cancers are not symptomatic and do not play by the rules according to algorithms, so it’s important for everyone to get their skin checked.

2. Which anti-aging treatments actually work?
Start with daily sunscreen. There is no better anti-aging strategy than protecting your skin from the sun. Avoiding skin dehydration is also important by choosing the right moisturizers, and many topicals like prescription strength retinoids and antioxidants can lead to improvement with long-term use. With our goal of keeping you comfortable in your skin and aging gracefully, we also offer Botox, fillers, chemical peels, microneedling, laser treatments, and more, tailored to your skin goals and comfort level. 3. How can I tell if a mole looks suspicious?
The ABCDE rule can be helpful for monitoring moles: Asymmetry, irregular Borders, multiple Colors, large Diameter (bigger than a pencil eraser), and Evolving (changing) shape or size. Additionally, any pink lesion that is persistent for beyond 3 weeks warrants a check. However, it’s important to seek evaluation by a professional as not all lesions or atypical moles play by these rules.

4. What’s the best way to treat acne?
Acne isn’t one-size-fits-all. Hormones, genetics, stress, and over the counter skincare products are among the many causes and triggers. We’ll create a personalized treatment plan for you, including topical or oral medications, gentle skincare adjustments, or in-office procedures. The key is consistency and patience! 5. Why is my skin so dry or itchy lately?
Weather changes, aging, or conditions like eczema can cause dryness or itchiness. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and apply moisturizer quickly after bathing. If symptoms continue, we can help identify triggers and suggest healing treatments.

6. What sunscreen should I use, and how much?
Your best defense against sun damage is a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, and yes, you should use it every day, even during the Northeast winters! UV rays can still penetrate clouds, enter through your car and other windows, and reflect off of the snow, causing skin damage year-round. If you have sensitive skin, look for mineral sunscreens made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. And remember, the key is reapplying depending on your level of activity, and using sunscreen in combination with sun protective clothing and hats.

7. When should I see a dermatologist instead of treating something myself?
It’s important for every young adult to see a dermatologist for a baseline exam and to evaluate any changes that you have noticed. Early evaluation leads to better outcomes and peace of mind.
